Chewing Gum

Is Chewing Gum Safe?

June 28, 2018 Oral Hygiene - New York Offices - County Dental Group

Did you know that gum chewing has been around since ancient times? It was then derived from tree saps and today the base used for gum products includes a blend of synthetic materials.

You might be surprised to hear that the American Dental Association recognizes that chewing gum has in some cases has been scientifically proven to protect teeth. (See the list here).

How Does Chewing Gum Help Maintain a Healthy Smile?

The act of chewing gum increases salivary flow in the mouth that can help wash away acids that are produced when food is broken down by bacteria in plaque on teeth.  A company earns the ADA Seal of Acceptance by producing scientific evidence that demonstrates the safety and efficacy of its product, which the ADA Council on Scientific Affairs carefully evaluates according to objective requirements.

Efficacy may include one or more specific indications, such as reducing plaque acids, promoting remineralization of tooth enamel, reducing cavities and/or reducing gingivitis. Studies must also show that gum is safe to oral tissues.

Do I Still Need to Brush my Teeth if I Chew Gum?

Wouldn’t it be convenient if brushing your teeth was replaced by gum chewing? That is not the case, however. Chewing gum is not a substitute, but adjunct for brushing and flossing. Dentists recommend brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and flossing once a day.

Does the ADA Award its Seal to Sugar-Containing Gum?

To date, the only chewing gums with the ADA Seal are sugarless. They are sweetened by non-cavity-causing sweeteners such as aspartame, sorbitol or mannitol.
